Configuring Windows95/98 Dialup Networking

These are the instructions to help you configure Windows 95/98 to connect to the Internet. You should have your Windows diskettes or CDROM handy, as new software drivers may need to be installed on your machine.

If you recently purchased a computer with Win95/98 installed on it already, and you have an icon on the desktop called Internet, you may click here to skip directly to the section titled Win95 With the Plus Package.

Dialup Networking Software Installation

Press the Start button, then the Settings folder, then the Control Panel folder. Then double click on Add/Remove Programs. Click on the Windows Setup tab across the top of the window.

Find the Communications line with the yellow telephone. Double click on that line to open up the Communications window. Make sure that at least the Dial-Up Networking and Phone Dialer boxes are checked; if others are that is okay. Then click OK on the Communications window, then again on the Add/Remove Programs Properties window. Close the Control Panel window.

Windows may prompt you to insert the CDROM or certain diskettes during this process. This is normal, so just do whatever it requests. If you are requested to restart the machine, go ahead and do so, then resume this procedure at this point.

Win95 Without the Plus Package

Press the Start button, then the Programs folder, then the Accessories menu. If you see a folder called Internet Tools, please click here to go to the section titled Win95 With the Plus Package. This section is for those Win95 installations that do not have the Internet Tools folder in the Start / Programs / Accessories folder.

You should have an icon on the desktop called My Computer. Double click on it to open up that window. You should see a Dial-Up Networking icon in that window; double click on it also to open up the Dial-Up Networking window.

Double click on the Make New Connection icon. When it asks you to type a name for the computer you are dialing, enter FishNet. If you have more than one modem installed in your computer, select the one to use to connect to the Internet from the Select a modem bar.

Press the Configure button under the modem selection; the General tab will be shown. For a 14,400 modem, you can choose a speed of 57,600. For a 28,800, 33,600 or 56k modem, you can choose a speed up to 115,200.

Then, press the Options tab in the modem properties window. Make sure that the check boxes Bring up terminal window... and Operator assisted or manual dial are NOT checked. The Display modem status box should be checked. Click OK on the modem properties window.

Click the Next button in Make New Connection. Enter the following information. If it is shown, DO NOT check the Bring up terminal window after dialing box.

Area Code: 214
Telephone Number: 446-0043
Country Code: United States of America (1)

Click the Next button, then Finish in Make New Connection. Close the Dial-Up Networking and My Computer windows.

SKIP TO THE DIALUP NETWORKING CONFIGURATION SECTION.

It is hard to predict what you will see on your particular machine, as you may be also running an Ethernet based local area network. These general rules should apply; if you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me.

  • If you see a IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol -> Dial-Up Adapter line, remove it.

  • If you see a NetBEUI -> Dial-Up Adapter line, remove it.

The Host field should be the same as your login name, and the Domain is "fni.com".

Close any remaining open windows. If you have not already been promted to restart the computer, please restart the computer at this time.

Connecting to the Internet

You are now ready to connect to the Internet.

If you have an Internet icon on your desktop, double click on it to start the World Wide Web browser. This should automatically bring up a dial-up networking window to connect to the Internet. Just enter the user name and password given to you by FishNet and the computer should automatically connect.

If the dial-up networking window does not automatically pop up when you start the browser, you will have to manually start Dial-Up Networking. To make this easier, open up the My Computer icon from the desktop, then double click on the Dial-Up Networking icon. This will open up the Dial-Up Networking window. Click on the "FishNet" icon with the left mouse button, hold down the button, then drag it onto the desktop and release the button. A "Shortcut" window will appear that says You cannot move or copy this item to this location. Do you want to create a shortcut to the item instead? Click the Yes button, and a "Shortcut to FishNet" will be created. Close the Dial-Up Networking and My Computer windows. Then double click on the shortcut icon to start the connection process to FishNet, and enter the user name and password as required.

NOTE: the user name and password and password must be entered EXACTLY as given; both of these are case sensitive and must be typed exactly as shown.

If you connect, and the Web browser works properly, then you have successfully configured your computer and are now on the Internet! Congratulations!

If it does not connect successfully, please go over the relevant setup sections of this document again and make sure all is configured as given. If not, feel free to contact FishNet support for further help at support@fni.com.
